Perhaps because it is neither as flexible nor as scalable as some other website builders, Wix has not always had the best reputation with respect to SEO.
But does that mean then that Wix is bad for SEO? Not entirely. In fact, for most users, it’s pretty good for SEO, and there’s no reason you can’t build a ranking website.
So, to settle the score, we asked the professionals at 1DigitalⓇ Agency, a Wix SEO company, what the deal with the platform was.
Here’s what they had to say.
1. It’s secure
Wix naturally assigns an HTTPS, which boosts security, improving the user experience and enhancing SEO.
2. It’s mobile friendly
Setting up a Wix store is a snap and the themes are mobile friendly, meaning it’s responsive to screen size, improving the user experience.
3. It’s easy to change page titles and meta descriptions
Editing page titles is one of the most important aspects of any SEO-friendly platform, and fortunately on Wix it is a snap. Optimizing page titles can move the needle more efficiently than many other optimizations; for what it’s worth, you can also optimize meta descriptions.
4. It automatically generates an XML sitemap
One indelible aspect of technical SEO is the generation and submission of an XML sitemap. Not all platforms make one, so this is a big bonus for Wix users.
5. It’s easy to optimize images
Compressing images and adding alt text are two of the key ways to optimize images for SEO, not to mention the fact that these optimizations also benefit the user experience, which can in turn boost conversions.
6. You can control 301 redirects
Being able to take control of 301 redirects and implement them as necessary is critical to success with any platform, as broken links and a messy site structure can easily dismantle SEO efforts.
7. Wix is constantly improving
For what it’s worth Wix is also committed to making its usability better on an ongoing basis, and that includes its SEO tools.
It’s also worth mentioning that Wix is also incredibly easy to use. Though it is not as flexible or scalable as some other website builders, in terms of ease of launching a website, it is easily one of the best out there.
With that said, there are some ways in which the platform stands to improve.
Here’s where Wix could be better.
1. There’s a lot of excessive code
Developers call this code bloat, and it’s realistically not a good thing for the website because it slows down the website, harming user experience. All that extra code can make the website difficult to maintain, too.
2. The platform is not particularly fast
This means that technical SEO takes a huge hit. Obviously, how fast or slow a Wix website ultimately is will be determined by the media used, but at the same time, Wix’s hosting environment is fairly limiting, which slows down websites built on the platform regardless.
When You Might Want to Hire a Wix SEO Company
With all of this said and done, and with the admission that building a website using Wix is unbelievably easy, for some merchants, getting a website to rank will require them to hire a Wix SEO company.
This is because there is no website that has strategy or keyword research “built in.” What that means is, all a platform can do for SEO is be technically sound. When it comes to link building, publishing content, and actually making the other optimization, you have to know what you’re doing and you have to make the optimizations.
That’s why most Wix entrepreneurs that are serious about organic growth end up hiring Wix SEO agents.
